HMRC has launched a new telephone line for tax agents to make it easier for them to contact the department with tax and self assessment enquiries.

Agents can now call 0845 366 7855 to get their queries answered.

There’s also a separate agent priority line for tax credits: 0845 300 3943.

The news follows widespread concerns over HMRC telephone service levels.

In 2008-09 just 57% of the 103 million call attempts to HMRC’s Customer Contact Directorate were answered – way short of the 71% achieved the previous year and the industry benchmark of over 90%.

New initiatives to improve call management have seen the number of calls answered go up to 73%, and figures from the National Audit Office show that HMRC is on target to answer 90% by March 2012.

“Agents told us that they wanted us make it easier to contact HMRC and wanted a single helpline. So we have reduced the number of agent dedicated lines from 12 to just one.

“This will give agents access to the same number of experienced staff who can answer their queries, but without having to decide which regional ADL was relevant to their clients,” said Brian Redford, head of HMRC’s Business Engagement Team.

Funny comment

This little gem came from George Bull, tax partner at Baker Tilly:

"HMRC has introduced a single phone number for agents to use in connection with PAYE and Self Assessment issues. Without a trace of irony the Revenue’s news release refers to the Single Agent Dedicated Line. How long before it starts being called the SADLine?"

Dedicated Line

According to my list the number is the dedicated agent line for the East Cheshire area.

The Issue I have with these agent dedicated lines is that Agents are giving out the numbers to thier clients. So when HMRC now answer the first thing they say is are you the agent or client !! Beats the point of having an agent line.

Waste

If, as seems to happen, the person your talking to doesnt have access to the clients records, they really are a waste of time.

agent lines

Dead right - unless it is a really simple query most of the HMRC operatives don't seem to know much at all and have ,imited powers to do anything useful.

Hang on....

"New initiatives to improve call management have seen the number of calls answered go up to 73%, and figures from the National Audit Office show that HMRC is on target to answer 90% by March 2012"

Does this mean that 17% of callers have to wait almost 2 years for their call to be answered?!

Fat chance Chris

I suspect the 17% have way over 2 years to wait!!

Whats' new??

I have a two page list of numbers with dedicated agent phone numbers (with their old numbers and new numbers and migration dates) that I downloaded about 2 years ago. Each number covers a group of specific tax offices. The number 0845 366 7855 - migration date 15.7.2008 - covers about 5 tax offices, including Midlands West. I assume this has now all changed??

0845 Numbers

Glad to see we are still given an opportunity to contribute to HMRC's coffers whenever we want to speak to them.

Typical, have checked this site and there is no "normal" number listed as an alternative to the 0845 366 7855 number.

ADL for VAT and other taxes

Does anyone know whether HMRC will issue an ADL for VAT, CT and PAYE issues? I was on hold for nearly 20 minutes on the general VAT line today (0845 010 9000).

0845 vs 030

HMRC should be using 030 numbers instead of 0845, as they offer all of the benefits of 0845 (such as auto-routing to multiple locations), whilst costing the same to callers as standard geographical numbers from ALL phones. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/03_numbers

0845 vs 030

What is the best way to lobby government for this?  WTGs? Institutes?
