Offshore disclosure countdown: HMRC issues final reminder

As the deadline under the terms of the Offshore Disclosure Facility approaches, HMRC are writing to its customers to give them one final chance to own up to any unpaid tax.

They say that as of yesterday (Tuesday) they had received 8,180 notifications and issued 44,390 booklets on the topic. The letter which is going out tomorrow (Thursday) reads as follows:

"Offshore Disclosure Arrangements

We understand that your bank wrote to you a few weeks ago to say that it had been required to send us information about one or more offshore* bank accounts you hold or have held.

HMRC do say that "roughly 200,000" letters are going out under this latest initiative, so advisors may need to be prepared for a busy finish to the week.

This should be interesting - which week?

In our experience bulk mailings by the Revenue are fed into the postal system by The Post Office on a piecemeal basis, such that they sometimes arrive up to a month after the date on the form. One wonders how this will fit in with the 22 June deadline?
