This companion article to the AccountingWEB Guide to Online Research highlights websites that provide useful background information for HR managers.

The article covering online research sources for due diligence work includes several sites that may be useful for HR managers (or potential investors) looking to verify the references and CVs of applicants.

If the candidate claims to have been a company director, this can be verified with a free search of the ICC database of 9m directorships and directors.

The Companies House website also provides pay as you go access to this information.

Hemscott.net also has useful material if you are checking candidates for directorships or other senior posts. Its services are not free, but it keeps up to date and extensive records.

If you want to avoid fees, going back through announcements via the London Stock Exchange's Regulatory News Service can provide useful background - try the keyword search option at investegate.co.uk.
