Online VAT for agents and advisers

Nigel Harris offers a step by step guide for agents getting started with online VAT filing.

The introduction of mandatory online VAT filing is likely to create extra work for accountants. The good news is that since last November agents who are not themselves registered for VAT can now register with HMRC’s VAT Online service and start preparing to file VAT returns online on behalf of clients. This was previously a big problem for small firms. The new VAT Online agent authorisation process is now within the main HMRC online agent authorisation service.

VAT onslime - a slippery beast

abelljms | | Permalink

Registering for vat onslime = 5 pieces of info needed, some of them not easy to find quickly.

Registering for corp. tax onslime = 2 pieces of info needed, both of them easy to find quickly.

we find a 30% rejection rate EVEN with 100% of the 5 magic pieces of data, i am soooo looking 4ward to the tel conv. with the online (non)helpdesk to fix this. Been avoiding for weeks.

It’s a no brainer y one is streets ahead of other for uptake, hence the ‘forcing’ system introduced otherwise no one would bother.

One day a miracle will happen and civil servants will be deleted from systems design

Security questions

I was trying to register for VAT onlineand found that they want the original date of registration as shown on the VAT certificate. Hands up those who have their VAT certificate in a frame on the wall? Quite.

So I sent an email asking what to do and they replied on the next working day. Wow!

If you phone them and give them the amount in box 5 (I think it was 5) on the last VAT return they will tell you the date of registration.

Incidentally the amount in box 5 is one of the five, yes five, "security" quetsions that you have to answer when registering for online VAT.

So if you have four answers they will give you the fifth one. I think it is sort of like a bonus point.

I do not know if they will tell you what is in box 5 if you tell them the date of registration.

Who are  the people who design these things?

Failure to apply

Sally Fletcher | | Permalink

We have over 50% of our on-line authorisations fail, even though the 5 pieces of data are accurate.

In a phone call to HMRC they stated that

"If the client is registered to file on-line on their own gateway, then the agent cannot apply.  Only one person/agent can be registered"

Can anyone tell me if this is true?  It sort of contradicts the 'agent on-line view' for clients.

VAT online agent

Hello

If I've understood your post correctly, the client needs to log in and add you as an agent for VAT Online via the Manage Services section of the Government Gateway. They will then appear in your VAT Online list of clients.
