Airline passengers and drivers of gas guzzling cars such as the much criticised 4x4s face higher taxes as a result of Gordon Brown's upcoming pre-budget report, the 'Financial Times' claims.
According to details revealed to the newspaper, the chancellor is preparing to hike up the top rate of duty on the most polluting new cars as well as increasing air taxes.
It claimed that the move represents an attempt by Brown to steal a march on Tory efforts on the environment and a response to the recent Stern report on climate change.
