Penalties and powers: Three IMPORTANT new consultations from HMRC
Three further consultation documents are published today as part of HMRC's work to modernise its Powers, Deterrents and the accompanying Safeguards:
- Penalties Reform is a consultation on proposals to extend the new framework for charging penalties for incorrect returns and introduce a new aligned penalty for failure to notify HMRC of a taxable activity.

Why now??
By issuing these documents in the middle of January, HMRC is effectively reducing the time available for a response, as many interested parties will be too busy with Tax Returns until the end of this month. Is this deliberate?


Hypocrites
The words "pot", "kettle" and "black" come to mind.
If they got their own house in order, so that we weren't wasting so much time cleaning up after their incompetent errors, then we might have more time to meet their deadlines etc.
