AccountingWEB contributor Rebecca Benneyworth was named tax lecturer of the year at last night's LexisNexis tax awards.

The honour was among 16 handed out during a ceremony at London's Hilton Park Lane hotel.

The tax personality of the year award was given to Paul Aplin, chairman of the ICAEW Tax Faculty and the man who famously persuaded Lord Carter to change his mind about shortening web filing deadlines. This marked a double for Paul as he won an award in the AccountingWEB 2007 New Year honours.

Hugging his stylish trophy after the ceremony, Paul vowed that he would continue fighting the corner for tax agents and push for better online services. Following the spectacular failure of PAYE online he said that he is disappointed that HMRC's systems have failed to live up to expectations, in fact the system is simply not fit for purpose.

Mike Warbuton picked up a special lifetime achievement award during the event hosted by BBC newsreader Fiona Bruce, while Vanessa Houlder, of the Financial Times, received the best tax writer gong.

Among the firms celebrating were Chiltern for best tax team in a large firm and Deloitte for best big four tax team. Digita's personal and corporation tax products were both nominated this year, and their Personal Tax was named top tax software for the second year running.

The awards in full:

Best tax team in a general practice – Sagars LLP
Best tax software - Digita Personal Tax
Best tax team in a large firm - Chiltern plc Corporate Tax Team
Best tax team in a boutique firm - Bourne Business Consulting LLP
Best ‘big four’ tax team - Deloitte R&D Tax Services Team
Best in-house tax team - AT&T

Best tax investigations team - BDO Stoy Hayward
Best international tax team - PricewaterhouseCoopers Human Resource Services CIPS
Tax lawyer - Graham Aaronson QC
Best VAT team - Deloitte
Best tax team in a law firm - McGrigors LLP

Best high net worth team - Eric Williams, Tax Partner and the team
Best tax lecturer - Rebecca Benneyworth

Congratulations
To Rebecca - well deserved. Excellent writing that dissects issues in a lucid manner.

Mike Warburton - was that for his PR talent?

Chilterns - was that for their ability to hide money offshore?
