SA Online expected to save over £40m by 2011

The Government expects online filing of self assessment returns to produce savings of more than £14m in 2005/06, increasing to over £40m a year by 2011/12.

SNP chief whip Pete Wishart asked the chancellor if he would estimate the annual saving to the Exchequer of the introduction of (a) self-assessment tax returns and (b) online filing of self-assessment tax returns.

Paymaster general Dawn Primarolo replied: "Self Assessment was introduced in 1996 to modernise and simplify the assessment and payment processes.
