Taxpayers targeted by new phishing scam

HMRC reports that an email scam has come to light which aims to con its customers - taxpayers.

In a classic example of "phishing", the fake email informs the taxpayer that he or she is due to receive a large tax rebate and asks them complete a form online by providing their bank details. Once the unfortunate has completed the form and pressed "submit" it goes, of course nowhere near HMRC.

A new approach, but there are tools which notify the user about the 'real site' they are looking at

- http://www.spoofstick.com/

- IE7 has a phishing filter included (Internet Options, Advanced Tab, Phishing)

- in outlook, running the mouse over the link will generally show the actual URL

As you quite rightly say, it is probably more about education than anything else because the tools are available but not being used
