Aqilla, the on-demand accounting system created by former Systems Union executives, went live last month. John Stokdyk reports

At the time of launch the system included sales ledger, purchase ledger, general ledger, cash matching, sales invoicing, purchase invoicing and time management facilities for a monthly fee of £50 per user per month.

"Unlike other providers, we are pleased to offer - right now - a full suite of functionality that supports simple, single-user owner-managed businesses and SMEs, yet can scale to the more complex requirements of typical mid sized firms providing features such as multi currency and structured workflow," said Aqilla director Hugh Scantlebury.

Those who just want to get their hands on basic accounting functions can log into the Aqilla site and register for a user account with the standing browser-based options. But Aqilla is also working with resellers such as 3r Fundamentals to support more complex customer needs. It also offers a "Ground Up" configuration and installation service with with more traditional customer support.

In review of the pre-launch system, Nigel Harris was impressed by Aqilla's uncluttered interface, which is based around a customisable home page that lets the user view KPIs such as debtor days and turnovers, RSS feeds and "to do" tasks and reminders (see below). Aqilla is an open period accounting system where data entered via the Documents tab is mapped into the accounting journals. This approach allows for very flexible reporting with drill-down to the original postings - "one of the most impressive on-screen reporting functionality I have seen in any online application" concluded Harris.

What an outrageous claim!!....
"Unlike other providers...." - industry spokespeople should know the marketplace well enough to know how they compare with ther competitors. There are other providers offering the same level of functionality and scalability and there is no justification for such a claim in this article, nor anywhere else where I've looked up Aqilla. I won't bang on about our offering, as I'm sure we're not the only ones who can easily counter such a claim.

If Aqilla are truly aiming to meet the needs of very small businesses, they have an odd pricing model. According to their web site they are also making Aqilla available via resellers and as an in-house solution. These approaches are not SaaS (which is never an in house solution nor something that is locally deployed). The costs of supporting local deployments means that it is impossible to offer a pure-SaaS level of pricing, so perhaps this is why they charge £50/user/mth. Are they really targeting larger organisations who are used to paying substantial consultancy fees to support the implementation of complex software?
