Having transformed itself from Pearl Office into Brightpearl earlier in the summer, the Bristol-based Cloud software developer is working on alliances with industry heavyweights Google and Salesforce.com tie-up will help push it into the big time.

The change of name was forced on the company by international trademark and domain name holders that stood in the way of the company’s growth, but reflected the infusion of $1.5m in second-round investment from Eden Ventures and Notion Capital.

Notion Capital was created by MessageLabs founders Ben and Jos White, who sold their web-based security service to Symantec last year for $790m and bring first hand Cloud expertise to the table.

June also saw the full commercial launch of Brightpearl’s integrated contact management, accounting, ecommerce, helpdesk and stock and order management suite. Available for a subscription fee of £20 per user per month, the suite is designed for product distributors with warehousing facilities and boasts around 250 customers including the Institute of Physics and online gardening retailer wigglywigglers.co.uk.

As he maps out his strategy to build a global software brand, Brightpearl founder Andrew Mulvenna is looking to emulate some of the industry’s high flyers.

“For me, the best role model is Salesforce.com and its chief executive Marc Benioff. The company has global reach and, with revenues of $2bn, it’s ultra-successful, while Benioff, with his various initiatives, is an impressive leader,” said Mulvenna.

To help it on its way, the company is investigating the potential to put together a long-term alliance with Salesforce.com. Mulvenna added that Brightpearl is also preparing to list the suite on the Google Apps Marketplace for business software users. He expects to gain a promotional listing by the end of the year.
