The management reporting capabilities TAS Books recently came under scrutiny from AccountingWEB consultant editor David Carter, who put its data selection, output and export functions through their paces in a software Lab Test.

Reporting has always been a bugbear for Carter, who complains that most users have to expend time and effort pulling together all the data to produce theirs report because of the way the information is contained in data tables that are designed for transaction processing, not reporting.

As part of a new series of "mini" software Lab Tests, Carter is examining the reporting features of financial applications in fine detail. Small business programs like TAS Books, Sage Line 50, QuickBooks and MYOB will be featured in future tests, alongside mid-market applications such as Exchequer from IRIS Enterprise, Access Dimensions and Pegasus Opera II.

In this month's TAS Books management reporting Lab Test, Carter calls the application "the accountant's accounts package" and praises it for implementing his concept of an "analysis-ready file" to save users the effort of searching for source data among transaction processing tables.

"Its reports are always rock-solid and reconcile, and there are no missing transactions because someone has typed in the wrong date," he comments.

It is unfair to expect the same features in a package costing £100 that you get in a £10,000, he notes. "TAS Books does not aim to do a great deal beyond the basics, but what it does do, it does extremely well."
