Dell's autumn crop includes slimline Latitude laptop

To prove its growing niche credentials, Dell spent September rolling out a collection of hardware for specific customer groups and market sectors.

The most eye-catching new product is the 16in Latitude Z laptop, which comes in a "soft touch" Cherry finish and features wireless docking and an innovative inductive charging system.

“We’re always perceived as being a fairly straightforward laptop manufacturer, but we started branching out into niches two years ago,” said Dell small business field product manager Lisa Holmes.

The target market for the Latitude Z will be “digital nomads”, high level executives and any one who wants a premium laptop to create an impression about who they are. “It’s not going to be a bread and butter machine. It’ll reflect your status, like having a BMW of laptops,” she said.

Dell’s server designers have also been busy, recently introducing four new Intel Xeon 3400-based PowerEdge servers and related devices. The PowerEdge T110 and T310 tower models and R210 and R510 rack servers run Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 start from £509 and £619 respectively. They are intended to provide a "my first server" experience and deliver good value for smaller organisations, the company said.
