Those huge, ugly mobile phone headsets are only a sort of dry run for Bluetooth wireless technology, but just wait till you see the real stuff over the next year or so.

The IXI Personal Mobile Gateway (PMG) will create a whole new wireless personal network. The PMG is essentially a GPRS phone - but without a keypad or display. Yes, it looks like a small, plain metal box. But Bluetooth means that you can then put it in your pocket or briefcase and forget it. You connect to the outside world via an inexpensive handset (which doesn't, of course, emit dangerous radiation because it only connects to the nearby PMG). Want to send photos or video? No problem, there'll also be a Bluetooth camera. An online wireless gaming console is also being developed.

Or look out for the Sony Ericsson HBM-30, described as "a music handsfree for music enthusiasts who never want to miss a call." Basically, it's the perfect product of Ericsson Bluetooth mobile phone technology and Sony portable music devices. The music player has a 64MB Memory Stick Duo card and plays CD quality music on your wireless headphones. When a phone call comes it the music is muted while the headphones become a hands-free headset. Call over, the music resumes. Due to ship in the second half of 2003.
