Baker Tilly IT advisory services partner John Oates has been elected chairman of the ICAEW IT Faculty.

Oates took over from his predecessor Jonathan Teller following the institute's council meeting on 7 May. Technology consultant Nina Robinson, who runs Warrington-based NR Associates, was elected deputy chairman.

The IT Faculty provides institute members with a form and centre of expertise on technology topics and produces a range of publications and training events. Previous faculty chairmen include former ICAEW president Paul Druckman and regular AccountingWEB contributor Simon Hurst.

Oates will fit his official duties into his everyday role as head of Baker Tilly’s Mancnester-based IT Advisory Service. As well as advising clients on IT implementation the organisation also assesses accounting programs that undergo the ICAEW's accreditation scheme - work that is often carried out by Oates himself.

Over the past few years, Oates has been a an influential figure in ongoing conversations with HMRC over its plan to introduce a software kitemark in conjunction with the British Standards Institution. That initiative has quietly faded away.

On his appointment, Oates said he was keen to focus on supporting members in their IT advisory role.
