Tax and practice software developer Solution 6 has added new functions to expand the reach of its Singleview data retrieval system.

Originally developed as a knowledge management tool within the north London firm of Berg Kaprow Lewis, Singleview has been developed by Solution 6 as a scanning and document indexing system that integrates with its tax, accounts preparation and practice management programs.

Solution 6 UK general manager Simon Crompton characterised the latest version of Singleview as a "digital dashboard" for practices that presented firms with a summary screen on each client within a few seconds. Its most effective selling point, he said, was "getting every bit of information on a client in front of you on a browser screen".

The application works as a "front-end" to other practice programs. While it will work with those not supplied by Solution 6, the company has configured Singleview to do thinks like compile "to do" lists from the separate modules.

Among 200 enhancements buried within the latest Singleview release, Crompton highlighted new links to Solution 6's PerTAX application so that data can be viewed in Singleview without having to activate the tax program.

Designed to run on Microsoft's SQL Server database, Singleview's security have been linked to the underlying Windows mechanisms so that access controls to folders and records set up on the network will apply within the practice management environment, Crompton said.

Further integration work has seen the application linked with Microsoft Outlook so that incoming and outgoing emails are indexed retrievable alongside scanned document files and records within the practice's software systems.

Crompton said that Solution 6 would be giving Singleview a concerted push in the months ahead. As a supplier of practice tools to middle and large accountancy firms, the company faces intense competition for its PerTax, Viztopia and other practice tools.

"Those markets are quite mature," said Crompton. "If you go in and try to sell a new tax progam, it can be difficult. With Singleview, the whole strategy is different - and senior partners love it. I'm convinced the next big thing in our market is not practice management, but data collection."
