The Top 10 printers - recommended by members

Choosing a computer printer can be bewildering - there are inkjet, laser, LED and thermal devices to choose from, and they range in price from £30-£40 to a hundred times as much. So John Stokdyk asked AccountingWEB and UK Business Forums members for help.

I have a Canon Pixma MP830 as a multifunction machine and have been very impressed by its performance and low ink costs and surprising very good colour output despite not being a photo quality machine, the only downside I have found is it is quite large machine and therefore relatively heavy and takes up a serious amount of space. I would recommend this machine to anyone but maybe the smaller versions of the Pixma if short on space!
I also run a Kyocera FS 1030 for laser printing for letters etc and have only just changed the cartridge for the first time after 18 months of ownership despite very continuous and heavy useage. Again highly recommend this as a mono laser for any small office.
Kyocera
I agree with chris's comments. We have just bought a second FS1116MFP and are very pleased with the quality and low cost -still on the starter catridge after several months.
Cartridges
I was interested in this article as, although very pleased with my little multifunction Epson DX4800 the cartridges are so tiny I am constantly having to replace them.
I need a desktop multifunction printer and would appreciate recommendations - I suspect that the DX4450 could give similar problems to those I have encountered with with the DX4800.
Great suggestion, David!
As well as suggesting unsung models, recommendations like yours will help us improve the listing. We'll use the cost-per-page formula you suggest and perhaps include a slightly more detailed table when we update the listing.
Many thanks,

Cost per page?
It would be helpful if you could give the cost per printed page.
See Printerbase.com listing for Samsung ML-2850 - as an example. It gives the price for the printer, you then scroll down to consumables to find the cost of the two available toner drums - e.g. one at £42 for 2000 pages, and one at £62 for 5000
Of course, there's nothing to stop you looking elsewhere for a better price :o)
Lexmark C522 colour laser printer
Good output, pretty fast on long runs, can be slow to start up when it thinks it needs to recalibrate everything before putting toner to paper, but the downsides are it is massive, and consumables are pricey. I wouldn't buy another one of these due to its running costs, but am very happy with the quality, its colour reproduction on normal paper being quite outstanding.
As material for printing are
As material for printing are going up high, printing devices also innovates and upgrade. New printers are coming out of the market and they come from highly innovated fast and comes out with good quality printing. Choosing the best printer can offer a lot of services.

Until now we have run three laser printers all HP (4000, 4050 and 4550C) and all have given really good service and are cheap I thought to run.
What has come through my investigations is that the cost per copy must also include the electricity. This may sound daft but an infrequent;ly used colour laser can cost up to 30p per page because of warm up and cool down times.
I have therefore looked at the bigger beasts particularly those from Cannon. If space is at a premium these may not be for you. The machine I looked at was one from the 2620 range. These offer duplex black and white and colour. A photocopier with an adf for both A4 and A3. The second hand price is £1300 plus VAT.
But the running costs are about ½p for black and white and 5p for colour. I calculate that my savings will be greater than the cost in less than 6 months. The main original reason for change was that the cost of maintaing the 3 lasers was £300-£400 pa.
My ideas are not for everyone but I feel David has made a good point about cost per copy and I hope the above will add to the debate
