On the trail of useful apps

Interest continues to intensify in smartphone apps that have a practical use in business. Gail Purvis uncovers some more gems.

Mobile phone apps are everywhere. When it comes to find the really valuable and useful, not to mention the delightful, funny or downright thought provoking in that enormous green pasture that is the internet, some sites more than others really set out to be helpful.

MakeUseOf stands out as an excellent place to start, offering commentary and tutorials on topics such as how to link Microsoft Word 2010 to One Note, to how to link multiple gmail accounts together or even how to use CLOUDload to download files directly to DropBox or email.

MakeUseOf sends out a newsletter that makes it easy to decide which items appeal - for example, do you really want to make Facebook and video calls using Skype?

Many of these applications may have limited use for accountants and business managers, so here are some of the key apps that could be worth time considering to save time in future. The tools covered in this article include:

  • Managing social media
  • Private social network
  • RSS readers
  • Smartphone scanners
  • Documents to Go
  • Mind-Mapping
  • Online storage
  • Note-taking tools
  • Mobile e-book readers

We wrote an article espousing the benefits of mobile applications like DropBox and Shoe Boxed for the purpose of receipt archiving. You can read the article here. I have personally found these tools to be very useful as it enables me to capture receipts on the move, without having to round them all up later! The digitised receipts get imported into Quick File enabling us to easily index and search our paper records.
