Trend Micro anti-virus update fingers Windows components

Customers of Trend Micro's anti-virus software discovered last week that IT security cures can sometimes be almost as bad as the disease. John Stokdyk reports.

An update file sent out last Friday incorrectly tagged some Windows dynamic data libraries (DLLs) as being infected, which made the updated anti-virus programs make them inactive by placing them into quarantine. Until Trend Micro released another upgrade to fix the problems, users found that components were missing from Windows, or their operating system just fell over.
