Xerox targets waste with Print Advisor
Printer manufacturer Xerox has introduced an interesting software utility to accompany its solid ink ColorQube 9200 multi-function printer range.
Once it is installed on a company network, the Xerox Print Advisor monitors all printer activity on a local network (regardless of manufacturer) and compiles the information into reports to help IT managers identify potential cost savings.
So far, so good – and many other manufacturers offer similar facilities. What sets the Xerox Print Advisor is the way it prompts end-users to consider their printing options. If someone attempts to print out a multi-page document on one side of the paper only, the Print Advisor will pop up a small dialogue box asking if they’d really rather print it out on two sides of each page.
A premium version of the tool is also being developed that will allow users of other printers to monitor individuals' print habits and the output of all the devices attached to a corporate network. It should be available in the autumn.
Printer energy and consumables costs are a major drain on IT budgets, so any move in this area is to be applauded, but for the financial savings that can result and to promote sustainability in business. Some high-end printers include controls that require the user to type in a PIN code before a device will print out a document and other cost-saving innovations that should start to appear in the next year or two in smaller workgroup printers.
