Join AccountingWEB’s virtual World Cup sweepstake

For fans of the “beautiful game”, the World Cup match between South Africa and Mexico at 3pm this afternoon kicks off a month-long footballing feast.

Those who aren’t interested, please look away now as AccountingWEB.co.uk is throwing itself headlong into the cauldron of hype with an online sweepstake. Even if you aren’t interested, you can still take part, and could find yourself the winner of a highly desirable consumer electronics device.

Thirty-two teams are taking part in the competition, so if we get more than 32 entrants, we will take the sweepstake forward to a knock-out round.

The World Cup virtual sweepstake is open to any registered AccountingWEB.co.uk member (no Sift Media staff members or their families, sorry). To take part, please post a non-anonymous comment below so we can add your user name to the digital hat.

Entries will be open until 12.30pm on Monday 14 June, when our referee, head of marketing Darren Falkingham, will compile a spreadsheet list using Excel’s RAND function to sort entrants into team groups, which will be published on this page.

The winner will be selected from the winning team’s group on Monday 12 July, the morning after the World Cup Final.

We’ll be asking some of our friends and suppliers within the profession if they’d like to join in the fun too, and if we are able to turn up a few more goodies, there might be some additional prizes. Just in case we need a tie-breaker, why not let us know who you think will win the cup, how well you think England are going to do, and the most exciting/amusing incident that you think will happen during the tournament. Even if you don’t win a prize, you can still impress your friends and fellow AccountingWEB members with your footballing clairvoyance!

You can also come along and indulge your footballing passions in AccountingWEB’s humour and fun group.

Great idea----my pennyworth:

England will get as far as the quarter finals.

The most amusing thing:

Spain will play Portugal in the final the day both of their countries default on their sovereign debt.

Clearly there is some link between playing great football and not caring about sovereign debt: Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain spells PIGS.

But then they are all probably right, who was it that said "Football is not life or death, it is more important!"

Good Luck

Having drawn South Africa and the Ivory Cost in our office sweepstake, I'm glad of this second chance!

I think England will get to the semi's but lose out to Germany on penalties.

My guess for a winner is Argentina.

And the funniest thing would be if any of the above are anywhere near correct!

England will win (joke 1), after beating Germany on penalties in the semis (joke 2).

Funniest event - Maradonna being struck down by the hand of God (or by a two-footed tackle by Mascerano after he is substituted) whilst Argentina are being beaten by England.

England to lose quarter final tie after Rooney carried off injured and Gerrard red carded for poor tackle that he was warning his team mates against making

Most exciting incident - member of FIFA refusing to take a bribe (Allegedly!) from Archbishop Tutu.

Most amusing incident - see England answer above!

England to go all the way and win on penalties!

Funniest moments:-

1) the tears on Ronaldo's face when Portugal are eliminated;

2) listening to Prince Charles entertain the Palace with "God Save The Queen" on his vuvuzela;

3) imagining the sad lives of the kill joys who have posted on the http://www.accountingweb.co.uk/poll/how-excited-are-you-about-world-cup thread.

Excited, but missing my team

With Norn Iron absent from the 32 (if only we could get New Zealand's qualifying group next time!) I'd be happy to see England win. I think they can, but I'm afraid I don't believe they will - hard to see past Spain, I think. And Spain do play some fantastic football!

No 'i' in team

Our success depends on certain individuals remembering the reason they were chosen for the squad, and to ensure that all players wear the shirts with pride...

Rooney remaining on the right side of committed..

Gerrard stepping up to the mark and proving that he is the rightful owner of the Captaincy, and doing what he does best for Liverpool - Driving the team forward.

Ledley king forming a defensive wall with John Terry - ensuring that Hart or Green are well protected.

and individuals such as Joe Cole showing their world class talent.

Predictions: Spain, Argentina, Brazil and Engerland to the Final four, With Spain edging out England in the Final.

Funniest Moment - Heskey and his legendary shooting ability..., or C Ronaldo obtaining 2 yellow cards to earn him a sending off for Diving - cue Gazza style crying!

Good luck to all those who have odffice sweepstakes - My good team was USA, and my weaker team South Africa - So it could be all over for me by Saturday night!

Potential upset/amusing result (depending on your allegiances) - Germany to fail to get out of their group as a result of losing to Australis

I dearly hope England will do well but anticipate another tournment of shattered dreams

After a poor draw against USA and a weak win against Algeria, they'll do well in the final group match to win the group, progress to the QF with a solid performance in the 2nd round only to crash out there!

Spain to win it though and as I have Spain and England in other sweeps, I'll be happy enough!

Hoping the French get what they deserve - a good hammering!

Looking forward to Messi - if the Argies can hold it together they may be a threat but Spain look the part

England probably quarters maybe better if Rooney stands up to the stick he'll no doubt get

Maybe the Africans will finally make a serious challenge

I fear England to reach the quarter finals; Spain to win - although would be happy if it's the other way round.

Amusing scenario would be the metaphysical battle if France play Argentina in the Round of 16, with Domenech's reliance on astrology meeting "hand of God" Maradona.

But good luck England, I hope they do well.

England is a favorite to semi final. Mr. Capello may have several stars like

Steve Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney in his team, he also have the

associated distractions brought by the star's wives and girls friends. Lucky

for him that Tiger Wood is not in the team.

His is challenge is to find an ideal position for each player, and he need much luck to go into final.

Argentina and Portugal would be the final team.

Ouch!

John Stokdyk | | Permalink

The "English Football Team School of Manangement and Attainment" quip is hard, but fair. Like Robert Green, I'll hold my hands up and admit responsibility for the slip-up. I dashed off the article on the Friday before kick-off and then high-tailed it to Scotland on holiday (no St George's Crosses there).

I asked a colleague to prepare the spreadsheet but he had more pressing things to do and went off on holiday before I get back. We'll correct the flaws and cast lots overnight - you'll see the spreadsheet on Friday.

Since 26 people entered, we'll eliminate 6 of the also ran teams and allocate the remaining teams to each member. We'll reveal the mystery prize at the same time as the spreadsheet and I'll see what I can do to rustle up a runners up prize or two for best prediction/joke.

Thanks for your patience and comiserations for those of you who support England. My money's on Spain, with Holland as a dark horse, but Germany and Argentina have surprised me by being better than expected.

Sorry if you weren't able to bag your preferred team, or if the one that has been assigned to you has already crashed out of the tournament.  But Craigy1874, Shorty, Chris Floyd and anneoc will be heading into quarter-final weekend with the highest hopes.

The prize for the lucky winner - whoever it will be - is a Toshiba JournE Touch internet tablet. I've had one for a little while now and once I have completed my review, Toshiba has kindly consented to allow us to share the experience. Pre-dating the iPad, the JournE Touch has been devised as a smaller device for quickly checking what's happening on the net, or listening/watching multimedia content. It's small enough to fit into a jacket pocket or handbag, and while it doesn't have adherents worshipping its very existence the way some other tablets are, it does what the company says quite well. Look out for a more detailed review in the next week or so.

The runner-up prize is subject to high level negotiations with management. More news shortly.

A deserved win (I think), despite a bit of a scrappy game.  It did make you wonder if the players thought that it was number of yellow cards that determined the winner, rather than goals!!

And well done too, to Mark Webber.  A well deserved win, especially after your team appear to show a real lack of faith in you.

Looking forward to receiving my prize!!
