About this episode

To celebrate our debut AccountingWEB Live Expo on 1-2nd December at the Coventry Building Society Arena, we've launched Expo Talks. Over six episodes, we’ll cover the core themes at AccountingWEB Live Expo, and talk to some of the speakers who will be previewing their sessions and revealing what they'll be covering.

In this fifth episode, we look at People

  • We'll discuss how accountants need to look after themselves as well as their clients - the mental health challenges, the ways to avoid personal burnout plus how firms need to change post-lockdown to support their staff.
  • We'll also look at the needs of the working parent and how the profession needs to be more flexible to enable accountants to support their families.
  • We'll examine how firms can support the other people in this changing equation - clients. What changes to communication style do we need to bring our clients along with us as we enter a future of inevitably less face-to-face interaction? And what do you do when they're wrong?

To discuss these topics, we're joined by three experts who'll be speaking on these topics at December's Expo.

Lucy Cohen is co-founder of award-winning subscription-based accounting service, Mazuma Money. Tech innovation is at the core of Mazuma's proposition but Lucy has ensured that people remain at the heart of her operation. She has written columns on AccountingWEB and presented AccountingWEB Live shows, drawing on her personal challenges to support and educate her fellow accountants on the deep importance of looking after themselves. It's this non-stop campaigning that saw Lucy bag the AccountingWEB Outstanding Contribution award at this year's Accounting Excellence Awards.

Zoe Whitman is an award-winning bookkeeper and author who helps accountants start and grow profitable businesses which work for them and provide the financial security they need. In 2020, Zoe teamed up with Jo Wood to build a six month training programme for bookkeepers, The Bookkeepers’ 6 Month Success Programme. On top of this, Zoe and Jo hosts free events for bookkeepers including The 6 Figure Bookkeepers’ Club on Facebook plus host The Bookkeepers’ Podcast - an episode of which they'll be recording live on Day Two of the Expo.

Sharon Pocock is MD and Chief Innovator of award-winning practice Kinder Pocock. Sharon was one of the first accountants to move their practice and clients onto the cloud and it's this dedication to innovative technology that has powered Kinder Pocock's high levels of client service. As Sharon says, "for me, the challenge is no longer about getting our clients onto the cloud, but getting them to enjoy the full benefits which comes from running their whole business on the cloud".

Lockdown may be over but the new working world is one where people will be at the fore. What changes do we need to happen? Our speakers today are part of the answer!

We have lots of other inspirational and practical sessions planned for AccountingWEB Live Expo, all aimed at giving you practical tips and advice on how to make sure owners, firms, teams and clients alike are all entering 2022 in the best possible shape.

Other confirmed speakers around people include the likes of Ria-Jaine Lincoln (Sole Practitioner of the Year, Accounting Excellence Awards 2021), Beam Training's Lianne Weaver and Kreston Reeves' Emma Chesson - and those are sessions all with CPD attached.
