Noted
My comments have disappeared from my answers listing
Previously they remained, but uneditable ( no yellow box) if sift wiped from thread

Nothing confidential in that thread

Question needed to be reinstated not wiped from living memory even if OP throws his toys out after getting a sift warning

The latest anon offering doesn’t even say please or thank you.

I must admit, however much my clients annoy me, they are always polite. Otherwise they wouldn’t be clients.

Does AWeb have such a low opinion of us that they think we are competing for such Anon freeloaders as clients? Beggars belief.

But only one point of view that I've noticed.

No word from Sift/the mods.

No resurrection of the defunct thread.

Maybe it's time someone reported me for starting this thread. (Perhaps I'll do that myself - it seemed to have an effect last time!)

After 10,000 likes we should get a response from the government & after 100,000 the subject should be debated in Parliament.

WE could even get Marcus Rashford on board.

DJKL, how many laps of your garden do you think you can manage?

Not that many, it is pretty short and narrow (50ft x 15.5ft)and with both a shed and summerhouse at the far end one really cannot do a lap as they are in the way. (The downside of Victorian terraced houses that have been divided and had their gardens split in two, they are not large)

Now if I could get to Sweden it would work as that one is 50 metres by 50 metres (1/4 hectare)) and whilst there are myriad trees near the boundaries, at this time of year I could probably walk round it without getting eaten alive by the insects.

I am actually heading out to my Edinburgh garden right now, no rain for a change, some blue sky and I need to continue getting the summerhouse wind and watertight before winter arrives., so will leave you all to your hard work and revel in the fact that as a part timer I can now do this. (Other half also finishes lunchtime on a Friday so we will soon both be in weekend mode)

Hello all - AWEB recognises that this is an ongoing issue, and as Richard mentioned in a recent thread, our Dev team are working hard on an ongoing function that will prevent editing/deleting original content from posts and comments. It will hopefully be arriving in time for SA season, but until then we appreciate your frustration and are grateful for your patience. Rest assured the feature will be available as soon as possible.

Thank you.

I would refer AWEB to Cheshire's comment above at 10:51.

For ease:

Cheshire wrote:

But yet again we are seeing inconsistent moderation. Some of the responses evidence so far when deletions feature:-
1) Post is re-instated in full, with name of poster (name of poster left out if its genuine case)
or
2) No action
or
3) Complete deletion of the thread
or
4) Comment from the mods on the thread reminding folk not to delete their thread again (or else)
or
5) Shut down of the thread so no more comments can be made
or
6) Emails to those who have reported the said bad behaviour advising they will warn off the offending person.

Should be the same treatment for all.

Put back the deleted comments, warn poster offline, warn poster on the thread (so that others take note!), lock out said poster for a period if they have committed the same offence more than once. Do not delete the thread and do not lock it down. Simple.

If Action 1 is an option, Action 1 should be implemented for the offending thread.

What Cheshire sees - what I see - what most responders to this thread would appear to see - is in issue with how the site is moderated, far more than we have an issue with its functionality.

Though I agree with you - that sucks too.

Oh, PS... you wanted me to let you know next time I saw a pink comment. There's one above. From Chris.Mann

I put the same question to Tallulah via Direct message and have just had this back

''Hi Chesire,

Usually if a post is removed it will be because the original poster has requested it be taken down. I am very sorry for the frustration, and we have taken your comments on board and are trying to figure out a fair way to keep as much original content as we can on the website.

I know some of you are understandably tired of hearing this, but there is a function in the works that will solve the problem of editing - it will be available as soon as possible.

If you have any more thoughts please let me know, and have a lovely rest of your day.

Thanks,

Tallula''

Usually, the OP has already taken down their post. So what you are saying is that the OP can decide whether everybody else's posts also get deleted.

I feel the question in the OP stands.

Notwithstanding that it is not there anymore!

You are mis-understanding the frustration.

This is a moderation, or rather lack of (consistent) moderation issue Tallula.

Can you please answer the question that TD raised at the opening of this thread, ie why on earth did Sift remove the whole post when Lee decided to delete his opening gambit?

The deletion issue remains and one which is frustrating, but had sift dealt with this with proper moderation it would not be as rife as it is.

Sift were meant to be bringing an edit cut off point, similar to the way their UKBF site works. I think 10 minutes should be sufficient to allow for genuine errors, but no way should an opening post be allowed to be deleted just cos someone chucks their toys out.

But addendums should be allowed. so things can be added by those who have genuinely started an anon post.

Problem Sift have with this site is that the whole set up is totally carp. The way you have to find out if someone has posted something new is so backwards that a 3 year old mustve coded the site.

You can get notifications when someone posts on your thread or follow a thread. I turned them off.

I had to turn off the thanks notifications too, for obvious reasons.

Totally agree, and I've requested several times that threads for new posts be highlighted so we can at least scroll down to see new posts. UKBF manages it very well, even scrolling for you to the first new post in a thread. If they can do it there, why not here?

But for posterity....

Mods, IMHO deleting a thread that members had spent time contributing to undermines the value of members' contributions.

You tell us - why should we bother?

I speak of course of the most recent example of this, the OP that started: "I cannot get my head around how to deal with the following. A partnership has two partners (Mr H and Mrs S) and it was created from scratch, therefore didn't have any goodwill at opening. Ten years later, Mr H wants to retire and sells his share of the partnership to Mr N for £60,000..." and is now https://www.accountingweb.co.uk/any-answers-144 (deleted).

Why would anyone bother responding is this is what can happen? Come on SIFT, answer

That was the question in the OP (though some mother** has dotted it out).

But let me turn it on its head.... lots of people do still respond. Apparently including me*. Why?

*Though I do now seem to be much less verbose, based on the last couple of days.

**Edit: I realise the reference I am making here to a comment by The Dullard might be lost on some, since that comment fell victim to thread deletion. But if you know Dulls, you can probably work it out.

You sound very contrite; I do hope you too haven't been hauled over the coals.

Lee has at least explained why he asked for his thread to be deleted. But the Sift logic of one day removing the ability to edit, whilst in the meantime taking down everyone else's comments makes no sense. And presumably all you will have to do, once the edit reform is in place, is ask Sift to remove your thread... and then we'll be back here again, unless something changes in how threads are moderated.

We've been here before of course. Lee's thread was minor (and I don't know why I seem so vexed about it, as I barely contributed to it). The take-down that still sticks in the craw was the one that prompted this thread: https://www.accountingweb.co.uk/any-answers/no-right-of-reply. (I know there have been other take-downs that have aggrieved others.)

Nice to see the new approach. https://www.accountingweb.co.uk/any-answers/vat-exemption-for-my-school

Anonymise the comments (fair enough) but leave (and reinstate where necessary) the content.

Oh, Wilson... I still haven't worked out what you are doing in sequence B, but the next number would be 3^33. I noticed (as you do) that the logarithms of your sequence followed a Fibonacci sequence (or, rather, the difference between the logs is Fibonacci). Fibonacci is adding; adding logs multiplies; so you must be doing some multiplying. But quite what escapes me. Series A continues 177649, 2097153 etc.

And again. https://www.accountingweb.co.uk/any-answers/my-client-is-considering-mov...

My grumble was always about the lack of right of reply. However, this latest is a good illustration of the wider benefit (for "all those with an interest in accountancy") of reinstating some of these deleted queries. I have come across the OP's misconception (that if you move into a property you magically exempted the entire gain) outside of Aweb. While the thread possibly didn't put her straight about that, hopefully there was enough of a "do what?" reaction for her (and future readers) to have realised something was amiss. With luck, they will actually pay for advice.
