Is it possible to access Sage 50 data without a subscription service? I only need access to some old invoices, so nothing complex and I do not require it to perform any calculations.

No. Tried Sage recently. Not endearing.
Try one of the free conversion offerings - QuickBooks online / Xero etc.
It should be possible with any version of Sage, might have to upgrade the data if opening it with a newer version.
Hi,
If you choose to terminate your Sage subscription agreement, the information you store in the software remains your information and you can remove it from the software before the end of the agreement.
Once the agreement has ended you're no longer able to use the software. To access your data again you must renew your subscription.

Unlike QuickBooks Online which offers free read-only access for several years, and QuickBooks Desktop forever.
