Accountancy Manager - getting a bit disenchanted

Lots of things it doesn't do which would make it a whole lot better

Didn't find your answer?

Hi all,

I have been an AM user for a couple of years now. I read here on AWEB - before I started using it - that it was a "bit clunky". I agree.

As I've been using it, I've noticed that there's quite a lot of (simple) things which could do with a re-think. Each time I ask the (very helpful) help desk if I'm missing something. Sometimes I am, but more often than not the functionality just isn't there and I'm just being told to send it to the Features Board for a possible future enhancement. I do, but then don't hear anything further.

All this is beginning to irritate me a little. I know there are other systems out there which I am sure do a great job (I'm interested in Senta's recent partnership with IRIS/Taxfiler (which I curently use for my tax filings)), but the pain of having to swap over doesn't appeal too much.

I'd be interested in hearing views from other users.

We use Senta and TBH I think its a great wee system. Expect to take quite a bit of time to get it working how you like it but once you do it easily keeps you organised and manages deadlines and team work. Unfortunately although its currently advertised as integrated with TaxFiler this has yet to materialise but hopefully it will come soon as I too use TaxFiler. It does have a few things lacking that AM has such as electronic 64-8 authorisations and I don't particularly like the integrated AML checks (so don't use them) but other than that its mainly a positive review you would get from me. I have been with them about a year and am saving so much more time than I was and still learning new ways to use the software each day. When clients upload documents etc jobs can be set to automatically move on (which was a limitation of AM that really bothered me), the same applies when documents are signed you don't have to tell the system to progress through a job it automatically does it for you.

Thanks for your comments. I take it you used to be an AM user and switched to Senta? What was the transfer process like? Thanks.

What things specifically are bothering you with AM?

Couple of recent grumbles...

- The 'Accounts and Return Details' tab should be separated into different tabs (because the accounts and tax return are often jobs completed at different times and when you update the progress on one it auto updates on the other, so is not a true reflection of the overall status).

- The T & C's should be downloadable in the same way that the LOE is (you can only upload them to the client portal, which doesn't help if you (like me) haven't got around to using the client portal yet).

AM have told me to make these suggestions to their suggestions team, which I have.

Agree 100% about separating the accounts and tax return tabs. A possible workaround would be to set up a custom event for accounts prep and only use the accounts and returns tab for the tax return.

I think (but I may be wrong ) that for CT the accounts and tax return , although both on the same “tab” , can have statuses set independently of each other - this would be really useful for self assessment clients.

I found it strange that you couldn;t generate letters easily through AM as it was email driven. I still write a lot of letters.

I;ve also come across logical office which seems a good product- anyone else using it?

I too would very much like the ability to generate letters instead of emails as like you I have a fair proportion of clients who don’t use email (mostly but not always older clients) .

TaxCalc has just launched Communications Centre. This combined with its Practice Manager Plus looks like a sound option.

I intend to move from AM to Taxcalc to have an integrated simple suite to use.

We were on senta for a while. It takes so long to set it up and the support we had was so poor we moved to AM and love it. I'm sure Senta does more, but I have no desire to spend days on end setting it up.
