Accountex 2023 - travelling from Ireland

Accountex 2023

Didn't find your answer?

I'm planning a trip to Accountex this year, would appreciate any tips on places to stay in London or things to do in the evening. I've only been to London for work purposes so may even stay an extra night for sightseeing. I'd consider a hotel slightly further from the venue to take in some sightseeing but London is so big that it's difficult to know what to visit.

You are only about 15 minutes away from Tower or London, where you could easily spend a day.

There are so many places to visit, too many to list, but it just depends what you are in to.

Natural history museum, trip up the (murky) river, people watching in Covent Garden, wander round Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and St Paul’s, blur blur blur.

Now you mention it, I would rather spend the whole time wandering round the Big Smoke and give Accountex a miss!

In the evening maybe check out China Town, a West End show or a sky bar with a roof terrace.

I don’t even know when it is, they must be urgently looking for content now MTD is no longer the hot topic.

If you are going this year i would advise booking a hotel asap, i booked mine as i was leaving last year's Accountex show, when prices were still relatively low. But all the local ones will either be fully booked or extortionately priced now!

Actual Londeners will hate this, but If you have never "done london" as sight seerer, then get with the Japanese tourists on an open top bus.

Did it with my kids when they were or 8 or 9 and I saw more in an hour than I had seen for years.

Take it from Westminster Bridge (good to poke round there, millennium wheel) and if you fancy a decent walk after, from there down to Tower Bridge on probably the north bank is quite interesting, or you can take the river taxi and/or sightseeing boat on the same trip.

Dont go in any pubs with tourist names. Eg "Shakespeare" or anything like that.

id not bother with the show, its just people selling you software. You can buy that at home.

Can you suggest any places to eat or go for a pint?

I too wouldnt be travelling from Ireland just for Accountex. Takes me an hour on the train and even that is debateable as to whether it is worth it. Normally arrive around 10am or so, mooch round the hall to see what is worth looking at and chat to a few suppliers i actually work with, pop outside and queue for ages from some overpriced lunch, then back in to mooch round to do another lap of the stands in case there is actually anything worth looking at. Rarely any freebies worth having or stands worth visiting. Mostly though it's dominated by:
- R&D/CA/Etc 'specialists'
- outsourcers trying to flog you 'offshore' workers
- Fee protection/technical lines that might be of interest if you dont already have one
- companies you might actually be interested in such as IRIS/Freeagent/Digita/SAGE but whom would probably come to you if you asked.
- various breakout areas or seminar stages, which used to be full of practice gurus whose ideas are so great that they are there telling the punters how to make a fortune from an accountancy practice, rather than, um, being back at the office earning a fortune from their accountancy practice..... Now they tend to have a heavy MTD influence too, which may or may not continue as that particular can get kicked repeatedly down the road.

If you do go, remember to set up a dummy email account and register via that for your barcode/lanyard. If you like, you can also register with your real account and put it on the other side so you can let the outsourcers and such like scan the cannon fodder one and turn it round to your real account for anyone you actually want to receive junk mail from. Sometimes i do that, but i try to make the two sides different colours or otherwise distinguishable so i dont accidentally give my real details to the masses.

It really depends on whether or not you're planning in partaking in the afterparties or not. If you are, book somewhere close to the venue...

Afterparties? Please tell me more!

Last time I was at Accountex was in 2015 and it seemed to get very quiet around the venue in the evening. I was only there for the day so correct me if I'm wrong.

Can't comment on 2015 but there are plenty of ways to sink a few free beers in recent years. I'll be running a pre-con AccountAxe the night before, after a successful trial in Manchester last year, then we'll likely end up in the Fox which is where most of the vendors will be chilling out after sorting their stands that day.

On the first night of Accountex it's likely there'll be at least one party on a boat. Capitalise splashed out on the Sunborn and Iris had their own with Chris Moyles DJ'ing, plus a cohort of vendors always club together to put money behind the bar at the Fox that evening too. Most of the local hotel bars stay open late into the night too...

Sounds like the makings of a great night out. I'll have to be careful not to enjoy myself too much. I'll try and look you up while I'm there.

Hi Ben.

Having visted London quite a few times this year. I enjoyed going to a West end show and the Tour bus is a great idea. If you like a nice traditional London pub and good beer you would like any of these pubs which I have visited this year in the west end as part of the good beer guide. All these pubs were really friendly.
You can then just travel to event but they have after parties now.

The Argyll Arms, 18 Argyll Street W1F 7TP (virtually opposite exit 6 from Oxford Circus tube)
The Old Coffee House, 49 Beak Street W1F 9SF
The Queen’s Head, 15 Denman Street W1D 7HN
The Lyric, 37 Great Windmill Street W1D 7LT
The Montagu Pyke, 105-107 Charing Cross Road WC2H 0DT
The Coach and Horses, 29 Greek Street W1D 5DH
The French House, 49 Dean Street, W1D 5BG
The Dog and Duck, 18 Bateman Street W1D 3AJ
The Ship, 116 Wardour Street W1F 0TT

Hi Sarah
Thank you for this, it's very useful. I'm definitely going to do a bus tour and hopefully check out some of the places you listed. I'll need to get my bearings between now and May to pick the best spots.
Thanks again!

Your very welcome Ben, you will have a great time and coming from Ireland and living in Scotland a trip is always worth a trip to an event if you can mix it up with a bit of a holiday and sight seeing.

There are after parties but you do not really get to see London properly. Hope you enjoy your trip.

Not necessarily breakthroughs as well established elsewhere but I'd go and see: FYI Docs, Fusesign, Connectworks, AccountKit and Valid8Me as a starter for 10.
