Just set up privately and starting to get busy; does anyone have any suggestions as to the best accounting software to use for doing accounts for sole traders, partnerships and general bookkeeping, VAT etc. I use Moneysoft for payroll but their moneysoft manger does not support P & L or balance sheet reports. Needs to be multiple company friendly. Have experience of sage, VT, freeagent. Sage is prefered but bureau is expensive.

Take a look at Taxfiler. In truth this subject has been done to death on here, with the same question asked in the last few days. Heave a search and you will see the latest posts.
As Cheshire has mentioned, there are quite a few threads on this subject. Here are a few that might be of interest -

In your position I would go for VT which will cost a fraction of Sage and do everything you have listed.
