Accounts Preparation without bank statements

Didn't find your answer?

My client provided me with very simple P&L and ask me to prepare annual accounts. He refuses to give me any of the bank statements for three accounts.

I am not feeling comfortable doing this to be honest. The company has a payroll and must also register for VAT soon etc.

It is just nonesence.

I just wonder, why he does not want us to see the statements?

|What are your views please?  Are bank statements a must for accounts preparation? Which I think they are, because they exist.

Thanks

I would make it a deal breaker. No bank statements = no accounts =ex client

I think your client might have misunderstood "Mind your own business"

Maybe :))))
HMRC certainly gets offended every time when they ask to confirm our agent's name. Then you spent 5 min explaining that you did not mean for them to mind thir business. ))))))))

Well, given the business actually has business bank accounts I for one would not be happy lodging accounts without sight of same; if it were my client either they provide or they go elsewhere, their choice.

Where do people find these clients? I'm either very lucky or my first discussions with new clients lay down non-negotiable ground rules.

A client refusing a reasonable request should be an ex-client pretty quickly.

Do you have a full set of records and just need to see the bank statements to perform or check the bank reconciliations, or are you working from incomplete records?

The client has given us self-made P&L.
We have now given him a choice as mentioned by many here, no paperwork > no accounts> ex-client.

It is quite simple, really.
You can not, with any confidence, prepare the accounts without them.
You can not, with any confidence, act for a client who is not prepared to trust you with the documents you request.
You must insist. If you don't you are not being professional and your client has you just where he wants you.

Ask him why he is refusing?

Although I wouldve done that the second he refused.....then disengaged.

Thanks to you all!

His approach to this and lack of responsibility as a director put me on alert from the very beginning.
I now let him know that if he is not willing to cooperate we cannot provide any services.
Will certainly insist on it.

We got statements after all.

Also, our Financial Controller told me that we can show in accounts whatever use of home dir told us to put including cancel tax, water rates, rent, without asking questions. She however said we will disallow some of course for CT but in accounts it does not matter. She also said that we will make client aware that this is incorrect, but will submit if client want us to.
I do not disagree with her. Am I correct?
