Accounts Production and Tax Return Software

Software for a small practice.

Didn't find your answer?

I started my practice just over a year ago, but so far have only had three clients, that only required a SATR. I have luckily had a few enquiries, after some marketing over the weekend, including some limited companies. I would like to know what softwares are recomended, that have packages for small practices. Thank you.

There are a huge amount out there, Taxcalc is very popular, Capium offer some very good packages at good prices, and BTC also offers a good suite.

For small practices, VT Software is very good and it’s cheap, combine that with FTAX’s CT600 module and you’ve got everything you need for small companies. If you have less than 5 companies, you could get these for about £250 per year I believe.

However, do think about the future of your practice, if you are planning some serious growth, you may want to consider scalability and integration with any bookkeeping software you plan on using, or any final accounts modules built into them.

I use VT for bookkeeping and final accounts and TopUpTax from Absolute for tax returns (self assessment, c/tax, trustee and partnership) which is virtually pay as you go (5 returns for £25)

VT Transaction+ for bookkeeping.
Pandle for online bookkeeping.
Moneysoft for Payroll.
TaxCalc for everything else, look at their micro practice bundles, which can be easily scaled up, when you grow.

Good luck

I love Digita. It's not the cheapest but it can handle anything and has very good telephone technical support.
They also offer good deals for startup accountancy practices.

VT for book-keeping and accounts
Taxcalc for tax returns
Moneysoft for payroll

That's for a client base of approx 100 tax returns, comprising the usual mix of sole traders, partnerships and small limited companies.

Taxfiler for accounts and tax returns (sole traders and limited companys) is very good I moved to it from VT and TaxCalc. They offer a startup package for 10 clients for £11 per month plus VAT

VT for book-keeping and accounts
BTC for tax returns
Moneysoft for payroll

We do find VT Final Accounts that is an add-in to Excel works quite slow with Microsoft 365 - don't know whether anyone else has experienced this though? VT Transactions works very well, but is PC based not in the cloud.

I use TaxCalc in my small practice.

I've found accounts production very simple, self-assessment and CT600 production a bit more fiddly than other software I've used, but still good.

Out of interest, what marketing are you doing? I've not had much success getting new enquiries lately - a couple of local magazine adverts placed, and a presence on social media have only yielded a couple.

I have a facebook page and website, so I used this to post in a local facebook page. I also made a similar post on the page itself which ended up with a lot of shares, and luckily this has got me five contacts.

I have all sorts of ideas and books with advice but I just dont have the time to update my website and do all the marketing on social media
I just rely on recommendations and a sign outside my house.

It is very inconsistent with the social media posts, but I tend to schedule a number of posts in one night so it is out of the way. I have done other things such as sponsering a local football team but this hasn't ended up with one enquiry.

VT for bookkeeping and accounts preparation
Moneysoft for payroll
SA100/CT600 - Will probably move to Absolute Tax but currently use Taxfiler for tax returns (but used Andica when I started up if I couldn’t file through HMRC)
