Accounts production software

Didn't find your answer?

I used to use Taxfiler for tax returns and accounts production, and have now moved to Absolute Top-Up for tax, but I need new accounts production software. I use VT Transaction+ for book-keeping, but I have found their Final Accounts abominably difficult, so I would like to find alternative accounts production software. I have looked at Capium, but it is fantastically overcomplex. Is there anything like the old Taxfiler accounts production on the market, where you just type in the numbers? That was really easy. What would people recommend? Importing trial balances matters little to me, I am quite happy just typing figures in.

What's wrong with just moving to IRIS elements? Almost exactly the same as taxfiler

I was initially put off by it being an IRIS product, but having looked at rivals, I might well go with IRIS Elements for accounts production. I have downloaded a free trial.

It is completely different from Taxfiler, being much longer and more complex to use, but it is usable. I'll go with it if I can't find anything better.

That is not entirely correct, its (Elements) still easy to use once one alters one's mindset a little though I admit they have made a few basic mistakes re display etc such as name truncating and years out of order. I hope it will continue to improve but I do hope they junk all the fluff such as credit ratings etc we don't need that

Once set up the data entry is just the same as taxfiler!

Did you speak to Iris about the migration to Elements or are you just looking at what's on their web site and the version available to other users? The version for migrations from Taxfiler costs exactly the same as Taxfiler and has all the same features. This version is not advertised on the web site so you have to use the version especially designed for migrations. And it includes tax and accounts production, so no need to use Absolute for tax.

Iris have clearly done an unbelievably poor job of explaining to Taxfiler users what the migration entails, as many of them are complaining for all the wrong reasons. It costs the same and works the same way; it's just built on a new platform (as the old platform is out of date and runs slow all the time). If you liked Taxfiler, not moving to Elements is crazy as it's the same damned thing; just running faster!

But, if you're happy with desktop software (rather than cloud), VT is excellent and very inexpensive.

"VT Final Accounts abominably difficult"

We all have our blind spots.

Final Accounts is exceptionally easy most of the time.

Share with us where you feel challenged by the software.

Awebbers may assist with the penny dropping!

I have persisted with VT, and an beginning to make sense of it. It being an Excel add-in resulted in a million irrelevant features, which is what made it difficult. I have looked at Capium, Absolute, IRIS and others, and they all have things wrong with them. I am now leaning towards staying with VT.

I have never used any other software so can’t compare but VT is fine. Ensure you use the Autohide if you change anything. It’s pretty quick once you know what you are doing and you can import from VTT+ with one click.

Am puzzled that you find VT 'abominably difficult', though don't know what sort of accounts you are working on. Simply importing from your Transaction+ file (with one click) is a pretty good start. As for the 'million irrelevant features', like most software, there are features you will rarely/never need, but these can simply be ignored. Hopefully with persistence it will fall into place.

I’ve been using VT for what feels like forever but I do still remember my feelings of perplexity (is that a word?) for the first few jobs. Eventually, I realised I was perplexed because the software was so easy to use and I had been expecting something more difficult.

That said, there are limitations to VT because it is Excel-based and there are tweaks which I feel could easily be made to improve the functionality but which haven’t been, presumably on the basis of keeping the product idiot proof.

Nevertheless, VT gets my vote every time. Plus if you prefer to re-key your TB rather than import (I do too), then really VT is absolutely ideal for you IMHO.

I've just migrated to Iris Elements. I had a lot of teething problems and very nearly gave up. I looked at alternatives. I almost reverted to VT having previously used it but it was like taking a step backwards - it works but it's slow and cumbersome in comparison to Taxfiler. I dont like the look of Iris Elements, the support is awful but it is now working so I'm staying with it for the time being and hoping it'll get better. I'm definitely keeping options open though. It's such a shame Taxfiler ceased it worked so well.

I share some of your concerns however the back engine is the same as taxfiler and i am just trying to alter my mindset to cope with the changes they have made which are not always justified. N

The only change I found was that self-employed income is no longer just an additional income source to be added to a taxpayer, but is now created as an extra client to be linked to the first taxpayer. Other than that, what else is different?
