Hi all,
Would really appreciate some help with adding a client to my HMRC Agent account, as HMRC don't seem to know the answer themselves after many phone calls.
Summary:
1) I took on a new client who had a previous accountant
2) I requested Authorisation Codes for CIS and PAYE and entered them on my online Agent account. However, the client has not shown up in my agent account. I phoned HMRC and they seem to think that the client themselves must be registered for online services before I request an auth code - but this is the third different person who has told me something different so not sure what to believe.
Is this correct? Anyone added a client to their agent services account without the actual client being registered for an online account themselves?

Your client needs to be registered as an employer for PAYE/CIS they will then get their Accounts Ref number and an Office Ref number which they need to give to you, then you can ask for authorisation through your agent account and a code will be sent to your client once you input this code they should appear on your list of clients
Hiya thanks for your reply. They are already registered as a PAYE/CIS employer and so I obtained these references and are the details I used to obtain an authorisation code. When I entered the auth code on my agent site, nothing of the client has shown up - HMRC say its because he doesn't have an online account himself, but I am not sure.
That's rubbish, I have several PAYE employers and not one has their own online account.
Two questions, is the client still showing as waiting to be authorised? When you speak to PAYE are you showing on their system as having authorisation
So when I typed the authorisation code in, it accepted it. However when I went to services you can use, the client doesn't show up at all and it's been a week. The first HMRC person I spoke to said it had all gone through fine and then "escalated" the issue. I phoned back a few days later and they seem to think no request for an authorisation code was put in which is total rubbish as the client received one as a result of my online request for one.
Have a word with online services. 0300 200 3600
Everyone's missed the obvious.
So basically you need to log in to the government gateway (the new one and not the usual hmrc page) then find the link for managing team access. Find the list of clients, one will be unassigned. Assign them to you. Now wait about a day or 2 and login to the normal hmrc page, ta da, client now shows.
