Advice on which course to take

Advice on which course to take

Didn't find your answer?

Hi,

I am just after some opinions really.  I have been working as a book keeper for over 20 years and am really happy with all aspects of my work.  I work for an employer which he has 4 companies which I process all the day to day transactions and then provide information to the accountants at year end to produce draft accounts. I also process all vat returns and paye/cis returns, and I also have 4 other clients that I do self employment work doing exactly the same work.

I have recently been thinking if it would be worth my while doing an accountancy course as I only have a BTEC in business and finance and I believe I have gained lots of knowledge with experience and asking questions and learning from the accountants year on year.

I would like to know what would be different if I was to spend the time and the money doing the course, what benefits would I get from it?

I charge £10 per hour on my employment but that is more to do with loyalty and flexibilty that is allowed within my work place.  In my self employments I charge a fixed rate of £100 to do a vat return on a quarterly basis after assessing the workload, or I charge £13.00 per hour on any other basis.  Am I undercharging myself as I think I do more than book keeping but do not have the qualification to show this?

Your thoughts would be appreciated

Cheers

Tara

I was in a similar position

I had a bookkeeping qualification and lots of experience but i lacked in confidence and wanted a better understanding of accountancy.  I did the first 3 ACCA papers ( i never intended to become an accountant or to complete the whole course ) and it has definitely helped me to understand the bigger picture and I now feel that I have a bit more to offer than some bookkeepers.

However having said all that, most clients do not ask what qualifications you have and are more interested in your knowledge and experience.  There are plenty of practitioners that have no qualifications at all and are great at what they do.

I suppose it all depends on how you feel, if you think you would benefit from some extra training then go for it !!!
