Advise on ATT / CTA Studies

I am ACCA qualified and looking to do tax studies and would like advise

Didn't find your answer?

Hi

Can anyone give me advise on the "route" to take to study ATT / CTA qualification.  I am ACCA qualified having done P6 but am confused with the website on what is the best route to take.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Please accept my comments, in the spirit, intended.

Here's an initial tip, you would like advice and not advise!

What are you wanting as an outcome?

I studied ATT as an adjunct to my CIMA qualification so I could understand the tax aspects of our reporting better.

If you are working in practice you may find CTA suits better - but beware it is generally thought to be harder than the accountancy chartered quals.

The first thing you need to do is to check what exemptions your existing qualification gives you. When I was at your stage, the ACA exams I had already passed gave me exemption from everything apart from the CTA final exam.

I just finished the ATT this year. If you've done ACCA then it's pretty straightforward. The CTA is far more in depth so work out how much time you have available because you will have to put in some serious hours.

As Tom says how you go about it might depend on what you are hoping to do afterwards. (Do you want knowledge that you will use, or just letters that look good?)

My knowledge of the exams is becoming less relevant as time passes, but time was when an ACA/ACCA wanting to move into a tax job(*) might be encouraged to do ATT (irrespective of any exemption from that) because of what it taught you. CTA is not ATT+.

(*) That description is bound to land me in hot water with some Awebbers, so please all accept it in the spirit intended. Absolutely no offence is intended.

It's been a few years since I did CTA (ATII in those days), but I would say that doing ATT after ACCA is stepping down to a technician level qualification, I would have thought CTA would be the better option. It will open your eyes to how little you actually know about tax.

Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest to do ATT and not do CTA afterwards; I meant to do both - depending on why the OP wants to do either at all.

And I'm merely passing on some old, second-hand advice.

The following link gives details of exemptions and papers still to complete if you click on the "ACCA" tab: https://www.tax.org.uk/students-and-qualifications/cta-qualification/exe...
