Allowable Expenses

Allowable expenses

Didn't find your answer?

Hi,

Is it possible for freelance content creator i.e. graphic designer / publisher / photographer to claim following allowable expenses:

- UK passport

- Annual TV License

Thanks.

You mean legitimately claim. For tax. No.

But legitimate claims (for tax) can be made for accountancy costs. You should think about hiring one.

The About AccountingWeb section of this site is seriously out of date

I can think of many allowable expenses for a graphic designer - my wife is one - but on none of my lists would the above two items feature.

I hate to break it to you Tom, but your wife is not an allowable expense.

Unless you can show that every overseas trip you take is purely for business throughout the passport's 10 year life, that would not be allowable. The same applies to the TV licence: unless you can show that every programme you watch is purely for business purposes, you can't claim it.

Based on your two questions to date, you seriously need to get an Accountant.

Is TV licence for an office distinct from your home?

We don't have one, as we have no means of receiving signals, but I expect it would be.
An office is public performance rather than domestic.
Think there are special rates for hotel rooms etc.

I think you may also need a PRS for an office- we offloaded our office TV years ago (though I keep having to convince TV Licensing). To tell you the truth when we did have one all that happened is one director and a friend of his who mooched a free room from us sat watching cricket and golf all day.

Director? So, company then. It's different for companies. (Companies don't watch television.)

A wise accountant once said to me, many years ago, you can claim anything but it is whether or not it is allowable.

TV licence is fine for a pub or a hairdresser. The TV is for the punters to watch.

Graphic designer? My initial vote is no, but I'm prepared to listen to arguments. I like a good laugh.
