Allowable self employed expenses

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get a comprehensive list of allowable and non allowable expenses for the self employed?

I have just completed an online HMRC course but I didn't feel I gained enough information eg I know that certain trades/professions uniform cleaning costs are allowable but nowhere can I find this on a list of allowable expenses.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :-)

Are you thinking of moving on to provide services to ST?
Start with thinking wholley, exclusively and necessary as no doubt covered in your studies. follow up with reviewing HMRC guidance and manuals (but take with a pinch of salt as its often their interpretation rather than the letter of the law) then read the legislation and any case law that you can find. Maybe even consider a tax course or invest in Tolleys and the like.
Dig around for some of the (later) posts on here as they often dig deep, cause a debate or generally just cause entertainment, but certainly make you think.

There is a definitive list in the legislation.

There will be no single definitive list that will meet all your experiences.

I think you will find the legislation quite prescriptive.

Unfortunately, tax is a little bit more complicated than a list.

What is allowable for one sole trader might not be allowable for another.

HMRC are not a good resource for what is allowed and what isn't. Rather they will tell you what they will challenge and what they will not. There is often a lot of crossover but the two lists are far from identical.
