Alternatives to Sage Job Costing?

Looking for an alternative to Sage Job Costing

Didn't find your answer?

Hi

We currently use Sage 50 and Sage Job Costing. We are a manufacturer of vehicle bodies and heavily use Sage Job Costing.

It is perfect for our needs with the booking of labour, materials, costs, stock, S1 items (as we have a lot of bespoke products) to job numbers and reports such as WIP, profitability etc. The problem is that whilst Sage haven't updated Job Costing for many, many years, they have supported it and guaranteed it will work with the latest Sage 50 version. Unfortunately that support has now ended by Sage, so we are left in a sitiation of finding an alternative. Sage Job Costing is very old, very clunky and slow, but it does do what we need and I've not yet found an alternative that does everything it does.

I have been on to Sage for years about Job Costing, they do not have a replacement that offers everything that Job Costing does. The projects on sage 50 for example barely scratches the surface of Job Costing.

At this point, I'm happy to consider anything, even moving away from Sage 50 to Sage 200 and find a solution with that or a different supplier of software altogether. If anyone has suggestions I would be most welcome.

Thanks
Greg

For an equivalent product you're probably looking at something like simPRO, Unleashed or Flowlens

I suggest you find the best software you can, and ask a developer to write an interface for you. There are software people who specialise in this area.

I'm an avid user of VT Transaction+ for all of my bookkeeping needs and it can easily be adapted for job costing by using its departmental analysis and ledger features coupled with just two extra control accounts.

I have adapted it to show both work in progress for each contract/job in one ledger called "work in progress" which you can use in your financial accounts, and when completed, the transactions are easily moved to another ledger called "finished jobs" for history.

It is a subscription based PC desktop software priced at £75 per year + VAT and I can't praise it enough.

PM me if you'd like to know how to adapt it.

Check out https://contractcosting.com

It does everything Sage Job Costing does and a lot more, all whilst still linking into Sage 50 (or Sage 200 should do decide to upgrade in the future). You therefore still produce management accounts, P&L, TB, BS, bank reconciliation, VAT Returns, etc. in the same way as you do right now, reducing the learning curve and easing the migration pain.

Cim 50 is a manufacturing addon for Sage 50, but I've not looked at if and how well it will handle one off manufacture.

If you wanted something that was more integrated than Sage 50 job costing is with Sage 50, then Sage 200 with Sicon project costing (and perhaps some of their manufacturing modules) is fully integrated.

Thanks for the replies. We've looked at CIM50 and it had quite a few failings in that it wouldn't allow several payrates for employees (basic and overtime for example), plus it wouldn't allow anything that wasn't stock which was a deal breaker for us.

I'm in conversation with a supplier regarding SICON although this will require us to move to Sage 200.

The suggestion of contractcosting looks a good one, it might be the perfect replacement.

Many Thanks
Greg

Hi Greg,

We have a replacement that integrates with Sage 50 and have implemented many sites, replacing Sage Job Costing, since it has been discontinued. You can find out more here
