Hi, i'm a handyman who will basically do any type of work - typically to residential properties - anything from fitting doors, to fitting kitchens etc.
I have completed a job recently, fitting a kitchen to a property owned by a building company, and they are saying that they need to deduct 20% from my bill as I should be registered as a subcontractor - is this correct? It seems a bit like overkill, the job was only around £2,000 worth of income, and them I'm back to repairing doors and building flat pack furniture?
Any help and advice much appreciated

It may not be correct. If you've not registered as a subcontractor then they should perhaps be deducting 30%.
Don't lose too much sleep over it - the tax deducted will be set against your tax bill.
They should have verified you before you started the job. Your lack of registration means they should have deducted 30% so you are both wrong.
No - I’d made some idiotic remark about already having a UTR, before putting my brain into gear.
Am I a contractor?
No, you are no doubt an accountant completely out of their depth posing as a layman.

Even work you are not qualified to do, it seems.
Why am I reminded of a certain Kenny Everett character whose name was a play on words which I can’t repeat on here!
Sorry, I badly phrased my reply. I meant his name was a play on the actual words which I couldn't say.....
