Anon function update

The anonymous function has officially been removed

Didn't find your answer?

Hi everyone,

We have taken your feedback on board and have made the decision to remove the anonymous function from the Any Answers forum.

This is to come into effect immediately as of today.

We hope that this will serve as an improvement with regards to some of the concerns raised by members about anonymous postings.

We also want to make it clear that we do understand that sometimes occasions will arise where there IS a necessity for the poster to remain anonymous - in these instances, please get in touch with a member of the team using the editorial email ([email protected]), or alternatively feel free to contact one of us directly using private messages on AWEB.

As always, we welcome any feedback you might have about functions on the site, so please do let us know if you have any thoughts about this or indeed any other area of concern.

Thank you.

Fabulous news.

Good that there is a fall back position for the genuine times it is needed.

Thank you for taking our feedback about this on board.

Hardly ever used correctly
Every Newbie fails to read the rules and ignored the warnings given.
Now we just need to figure out when 'I have a client that..' is not a true comment

Great news. Well done A-Web admin (yuck - i feel dirty just writing that).

If anyone complains, tell them they can have it back if, and only if, they agree for all unnecessarily anon questions to be sent to them personally by email or PM

Whilst it never bothered me that much (as nearly everybody uses an alias anyway), it did seem to be used disproportionally by those with an 'attitude problem' ... so thank you for listening to the requests.

Out of curiosity, I don't have access to your database (nor the time to trawl through the posts collecting stats), but I've observed a strange phenomenon over the last few weeks:
* A surprisingly high number of first-time posters (i.e. those who according to their profile have never before posted anything - question, response or comment), who nevertheless have apparently been a member since (various dates in) 2015!

I can't be bothered to work out a plausible conspiracy theory to explain this, but just wondered if anyone else had noticed the same or has a theory as to the hidden logic?

Ive noticed it too. Although probably going on for longer than you think.

My theory is that people lurk and then get to the point of being desperate to find an answer to a burning question so have to post.
or
More likely, they have just being posting as anon, so could well have a shock when they come to try it again. Most folk as you know rarely come back on to answer questions or interract in any way so this works well for them. Although you can also see those who only ever have answers to their own questions so have blatantly being misusing the anon feature.
or
Some just set up accounts years ago and forgot about them (minority I suspect)

Yeah well ...
Drat you've spotted the weakness in my question - although few would suggest I've never before posted anything (the quality may be questionable but not the quantity).

Hooray - very rarely do people need to post as anonymous.

Looks like you've missed one, Tallula!

Out of curiosity, what will become of pre-existing Anonymous posters' identities? Will they remain anonymous, or will their usernames be revealed in historic threads?

(There are many anonymous posters, and for that matter respondents, in historic threads. I have a scratchy memory of Aweb, some years ago, updating their platform and giving each member an individual choice as to whether or not old posts should carry their usernames or instead be anonymised.)

Good question - we can confirm that anonymity will remain for all historic threads. It's just future postings that will be affected.
