Anonymous feature

A suggestion/thought

Didn't find your answer?

I have an idea for dealing with the much loved Anonymous feature. If instead of the post showing up as posted by "Anonymous" it instead showed "Moron", then it would generally be a much more accurate description of the OP, and might put off people from misusing it. Just a thought.

What's wrong with Freeloader?
Or, better still, "It's all about me"?

There's surely more than sufficient anonymity in the majority of the user names, which present on this site already. The OP being a prime example of the case in point.

There are times when accountants may genuinely want to use the Anonymous feature and it would be a shame to lose that option. How about Anonymous posts have to be approved before being published?

I can see your point. However, I'm sure you'd accept that the present arrangement is regularly abused and, open to ridicule?

Is it a Cambridge comma when it appears after the "and"?

(Think punting, to get that [attempted] joke.)

Anonymous is annoying. But I wouldn't scrap it. We can respond as we wish (within the rules of course!) or not respond at all.

The point is that 99 times out of 100 the facility isn't being used in accordance with the site rules!

Maybe. But it's for Sift to enforce Sift's rules. (As I've said before, I think the text that you [rightly, IMHO] quote and quote again, which sets out the rules, should be an auto reply to every Anonymous query.)

All we can do is respond - or not.

Definitely. Does reporting any said posts make any difference?

Your name is a bad mix of capitals and lower case, which, as well as being a bad pun on the subject matter, is also very annoying. Vile is, of course, just vile.

Fool! It is a mixture of lower case and the number 0.

Which must mean there is an Anonymous among us, but who?

Might not be illegal but it's pretty bloody stupid! Why make the same mistake twice?

And who would be stupid enough to make the mistake twice at the same time.

I've never understood the value of the anonymous feature when it's just as easy to set up a profile under a pseudonym.

I'd never do that of course, us Wolf's don't hide behind such veils!

But surely you just don't link the profile to yourself and you're fine? Post away and leave out client specific details and you're just as anonymous.

I'd rather see Anonymous gone (note, no zeros)

The fact that something gets abused is not, of itself, an argument for scrapping it. (Not a logical argument, anyway.)

It can form part of a logical argument for better policing and enforcement. Maybe Sift does police and enforce. How would we know? We all suspect zero policing and minus zero enforcement goes on.

The problem of downgrading of the site is self inflicted. There's no obligation to reply to posts. If we all ignored anonymous, s/he'd soon eff off.

Without Anonymous what will we all talk about?

It serves a role, channeling vitriol, abuse and sarcasm- without it we would all have no purpose in life.

I am not PAYE all the time just yet, in fact even come October I will only have two part time employments- I can really recommend a three day working week four day weekend.

Today was a very productive day (hence no postings until the evening) , my low, Trump inspired, garden wall has seen real progress though my hands are now looking like wrinkled prunes from the mortar.

May I just point out, whether you want me to point it out or not, that it's very easy to find out the screen name of the man behind the curtain but, usually, of little use whatsoever. Sometimes, however, it is though.

A loyalty scheme- collect the points and purchase an anonymous question.

We could expand the idea and have an online catalogue to work out how we wanted to spend our points if not by Anonymous Questions. Something like the following could appeal to a significant cohort of regulars- 5 points for a mild swear word , 10 points for something stronger, 20 points for an unlimited multi word foul mouthed tirade (Our bestseller) etc
