Any Answers Help or hindrance?

Didn't find your answer?

I really like Any Answer I learn a lot from it and it  also helps a great deal. I am working towards becoming far more efficient. One area would be AW access on only once a day. At times I use AW as a distraction (like now!) not to those tasks I do not like to do.

I will set all the responses to received updates daily. I will set my updates  to receive daily updates. I will now only look at AW during my off peak hours. Unless I have a pressing question to ask.

How do you use AW? I am sure you are far better than me!

Without being cheeky..........

You could try cutting down your question count.

Regular

I have an any answers RSS feed and everytime I'm between tasks I'll have a quick look for anything that looks interesting and noteworthy. Or, if I'm looking for some specific help I may search and then ask, though most of my questions are quite easy. I like to give the feed a read because it helps me learn different things that I wouldn't normally even think about...

AccountingWEB anonymous

I seem to remember there being a thread a while ago where people were discussing their addictions to AccountingWEB and someone suggested setting up an 'AccountingWEB anonymous' self help group for those whose lives were being taken over by it! :-)

It sounds like you have a good system for coping with it - checking at set periods each day. I imagine if you work by yourself, it's sort of like being in a crowded online office where you can shout questions across the desks. I'm glad to hear it's been useful to you!

Work-Life Balance

I find AWeb is the perfect companion to a cup of coffee - and less fattening than bourbon biscuits :)

It's all part of the work-life balance, a way of removing stress and switiching off from the frustrations of everyday. As I've said elsewhere learning to relax mentally is vital for everyones welbeing.

It is a Help, I would say.

As for being disturbed and distracted from your work (when you should be working) surely you can use a filter for any incoming emails and only read them when you feel it is okay.

Otherwse, as you must surely realise, it would be a case of you just controlling your own surfing habits to times of the day when it is okay -- ie outside your assigned work hours.  A personal ethics matter, yes?  The finger points at you, sir.  You are the one that needs to get control into your life, or not.  Any Answers (AW?) is not the 'who' to blame.

We are in a time where one's blame-finger is so messed up that is unable to point back at outsselves on all sorts of matters, unable to accept that we might possibly be wrong at all.  Yes, it is always tough to accept it, maybe, but if wanting to solve this (or any) problem, you have to first get the right target, the source of the trouble, and then you can make suitable changes that will improve the situation.

Aweb

I have found myself losing too much time to it lately and have vowed to limit my useage, not just AWEB but other sites.  As OP suggests it can sometimes be used in preference to working on something that you don't want to do.

C_D - Does AWEB relax you then? You don't always appear relaxed to me ;)

Relaxed - of course I am (usually).

Let's just say it's far more relaxing that dealing with some brain dead muppet at HMRC, or like today, dealing with an equally brain dead crown prosecutor who is trying to build a case out of nothing and wasting a lot of taxpayer's money doing it.

Learning how to "switch off" really should be part of the training in any profession and over the years it's something I've learnt to do reasonably well - although not always successfully.  Usually I can switch off from most problems, with the one exception - I never have, and probably never will, be able to ignore injustice. Show me evidence that an innocent person has been wrongly accused or convicted, or, wrongly assessed for tax they plainly do not owe, and I will move heaven and earth to put that injustice right.

My other "pet hate" that I find difficult to ignore, is officious pompous assess who are given a little power and misuse it. You know the type - council car park attendants who think that a peaked cap makes them something important.

But yes, AWeb does relax me, and if my advice helps someone achieve their aims and helps them build a better practice then it's worthwile.

Please read the OP again

Not all but some people have responded with some misunderstanding. I said at times AW is distracting. Some of the responses have taken the stance that I just cannot control myself. This is not the case and of course I take full responsibility for my actions.

The questions I put on AW really affect me. Working on my own I do not have a chance to walk up to someone and exchanage ideas. I have found the responses really helpful. I think I have saved months of making the same costly mistakes. AW has people of varied experience coming from different perspectives.

Responses from people with real life experience that I value greatly. I rather have this than sitting in front of some life coach- just not for me, Furthermore, I hope questions that I raise and responses also help others.

I will carry on posting questions that are important to me.

Gossip

If you worked in an office you would no doubt spend xx minutes a day talking to co workers about how your favorite football team won at the weekend, or the latest government pronouncement, or whatever.  Simply look on AW as a substitute for that time - and at least here you will be discussing work related topics (some of the time).

.

@C_D - Your comments are very helpful, 40 years worth of experience being passed on for free!

@ FirstTab - You say a lifecoach is not for you but have you tried one? Works for me.  Trouble is when your the boss you have no one to report to or to challenge you - my coach ensures that I don't get away with anything!  I always come out of our meetings feeling ready to take on the world and with an action plan of how to do it.  Half the time she doesn't even say anything just weeds out from me what I need to do.  Like anyhting its who you work with - I have met some life coaches who are a total waste of space.  I actually think it's something that you may want to consider given your new found zest!

Lifecoach???????????????

What the hell is a "lifecoach" and isn't it just a different name for a therapist?  Personally I just talk to the cat, he only charges the occasional tin of Tuna and his advice is simple - just curl up and have a good sleep.

Home Comforts

Well done C-D best advice yet ! The cat looks extremely relaxed. Far better than pouring your heart out to someone who forgets who you are the moment the next patient comes through the door.

Life-cat

I agree C-D. My dogs are all the therapy I need, too.

Thanks for a nice, light-hearted post FirstTab and everyone - I find the web in general addictive as there is so much you can learn, so I think we're all in good company here! Also, you're quite right about others learning from your questions - I view most questions and responses and have learnt all kinds of things that don't affect me now but that may well do in future, so I'm grateful for every question everyone asks.

Massive Help

Answering my own question!

I have found AW a massive help. In particular I love such diverse opinions. At times some members do take things personally and the thread course totally of course. Becky come out with her whip to sort things out!

The contributions from members (I am really thankful for) have helped in the following ways:

More recently as a direct result of reading responses I decided to move out from my home and get an office - I move in on Monday. I joined a weight loss club yesterdayHaving been through a terrible franchise experience, It feels great to try and help others and also highlight the some dodgy franchiorsJust getting views from users (not sellers) about sofware, finding an office, views on a particular dominant suppliers (Sage, IRIS) saving me a lot of money and time. Those big boys suppliers take notice here (not sure about Sage and IRIS!). Otherwise I would and others would just be ignoredIt saved me the cost of life coach/counsellor. Plus this is just not for me. As everyone know working on your own is isolating.  AW to a large extent covers this isolation.I do not feel I am on my own.

Plus it is geat to know others have experienced similar problems and giving the benefits of their experience.

AW at times is distracting but that's down to me.

Good.

That's a sign that you're getting over the stress.  Remember you work to live, you don't live to work.

Sometimes work can be interesting, fulfilling, occasionally something comes along that you can be really passionate about - a cause that you believe in.  But much of the time work is boring, routine, and carried out for client's who really dont appreciate your efforts.

Learn to chill out.  I find a cup of tea or coffee and 10 minutes on AWeb does it for me.  As for my "assistant" well as you can see he has relaxation off to a fine art (but I really must put him on a diet).
