applying for self employment

HMRC keep saying not recognised name address to national insurance number

Didn't find your answer?

I always apply for self employment via my agents gateway but now the last two Ive tried to do I get the following message -

Personal details mismatch

The name, date of birth or address entered does not match the details held by HMRC for the National Insurance number provided. Check the details with the information provided by your client. If the information entered is correct, check with your client to ensure they provide the same information as held by HMRC.

If changes are required to the personal details, your client will need to do this themselves via their Personal Tax Account.

Is anybody else having the same issue?

thanks

sarah

I had a similar situation but my client was set up for SA OK - she didn't need to be set up as self-employed so that might be different.

I got a similar message and we decided it must have been because my client had got married in the last few years and HMRC maybe had her maiden name against her NI record although her employer had it correct. She was sent a form to complete, filled it in and sent it back and as far as I know it was all sorted but it didn't hold up the SA registration.

Recently married ? Or recently flitted ?

I'm afraid these things are a bit of detective work but the first port of call would be to see what's on the client's PTA.

This often happens, and so I don't even bother trying online anymore. I just use the paper CWF1.

Sad.

But wise.

Had exactly this last week. Knocked back and got the client to ring and register himself. Warned him in advance that this might happen. Believe it’s a nudge to get the taxpayer to open a personal tax account? And another kick against the profession. Once again, the inefficiency of HMRC had to be overcome.

I think you are correct, HMRC just want everyone to have a personal tax account !!

Yes - same issue - the client name, NINO, address, town and postcode all correct but, as county missing, it did not "match". Got client to confirm exact details on PTA in order to resolve.
