authorisation to submit EU VAT refund request

Authorisation request repeatedly rejected

Didn't find your answer?

Our client is signed up for MTD, and wants to recover VAT on hotel bills etc from European working trips.  I have tried through our old Gateway, and the authorisation request is repeatly rejected.

I have tried through the new agent services account, but it states we are already registered to manage the client VAT. I tried authorisation for "something else" and am directed to Guidance notes for setting up authorisations.

The client has tried through his own Gateway - we can find no option there for EU VAT refunds.

I can't get through to HMRC - although apparently there is "lots of useful advice on the HMRC website". Who knew?

Any advice? I have four weeks to get the refund request submitted before the window closes.

Problem now solved. I managed to get a web chat, and after waiting around 25 minutes, I got an answer to the problem. The authorisation process asks the month of the last submitted VAT return, and the Box 5 figure. I diligently entered these.

However, the question does not refer to the last submitted VAT return. It is actually asking for the last VAT return submitted before migration of the client to an Agent Services Account, as part of MTD. So I actually should have entered details from a year ago.

Unless you go through the process, how the heck are you meant to know that HMRC doesn't "know" the last Box 5 figure submitted?

I had exactly the same problem last week. I was bounced from the online services webchat (which is where the error message sends you) to the vat online webchat back to the online webchat again. None of them knew what the problem was. To be fair, though, I rang the VAT helpline, and spoke to a human being who sorted the problem in about 10 seconds flat. Just a pity that I'd spent several hours getting nowhere on the various webchat services.
My question would be why on earth do they ask for figures from the LAST SUBMITTED VAT RETURN when what they really mean is the figures from a random VAT return from about 18 months ago?
Is this really the world class digital tax system that HMRC seems to think that it already is?
