Barclays Bank

Why did they introduce this requirement ?

Didn't find your answer?

I'm the treasurer of a small charity looking to change banks as our existing Nat West branch is being closed. I contacted Barclays re opening teh new account and all was going well UNTIL

"We need your mobile number, without which we will not open an account"

WHY

From other answers you may recall I do not have a mobile nor will I

Not sure how their internet banking security is set up but could it have something to do with sending security codes by text?

I have a joint barclays account with my father which I operate on his behalf without a phone.

No doubt written by 25 year old who cant imagine some people don't have mobiles.

As a treasurer of a number of things locally, they all wanted to move banks due to branch closures, specifically HSBC, which was used by the majority of town organisations due the great manager we used to have. This has proven to be a major headache. Answers like "yes, this organisation really did start in 1272, do you want to see our Royal Charter? By the way it is latin!" were not readily accepted.

Another one (Barclays) wanted a certified copy of the original trust deed plus certified copies of all the trustees resignations and appointments since its inception forty five years ago!

On the basis that Barclays too may well choose to close down or operate whimsical opening hours (as ours has!), I would stay put and pay in at a Nat West somewhere else.

Re the mobile phone, if you tell them that you don't want internet/telephone banking, the problem should go away.

According to Ofcom 6% of the adult population don't have a mobile phone, presumably Barclays don't want the business.

I have been running a Barclays business account for a bit over two years, with internet banking, all without giving them my mobile number, it all works whch is fortunate as there is no phone signal. So it is not needed to operate the account. I just ignore the requests to give them the number.

Will they accept a landline number instead?

I too have my business account with them.
I offered my land line but was told that from April this year a mobile no is mandatory
I told them they have not got the business and am now trying Lloyds

Bernard, one think you could do you really want this bank is to buy a £10 pre-pay phone on a pay as you go contract. Just leave it in the drawer turned off.

I have one for my business santander account as I have the old "free banking forever" offer (suckers!). Just sits there and I recharge it once in a blue moon if I need to make a payment with a different reference which they text to me.

Lion I did ask why and was told they didn't know but that it was Bank policy.
If I can be bothered in a quiet moment I might drop a line to the CEO and ask why
