We might have an opportunity to purchase a small practice in a town some 20 miles away. The location
is commercially viable (as is too our current locale). Would anybody in AccountingWeb like to share any hints, tips and pitfalls that could be useful for one qualified professional (me) when running / operating two offices? Thank you.

Either that, or you would require a partner or someone sufficiently senior to run the other office.
Good luck but not my chosen route. After paying a senior to run another office will you make any incremental profit? The type of person that you want is probably already running their own business.
