Can Executors file a tax return on-line?

HMRC saying: "Personal Representatives or Executors cannot file a Tax Return online."

Didn't find your answer?

I am completing the final tax returns for a deceased client. I have been passed an HMRC letter addressed to the executor that states:

"For security reasons, Personal Representatives or Executors cannot file a Tax Return online."

Is this correct? In the past I have filed returns for deceased clints on-line without a problem, and HMRC once took 10 months to process an in-year return filed on paper, so I was planning on waiting until April and filing on-line.

Does anyone know the current situation for filing on-line in these circumstances?

Never had a problem.
Obviously wait until post 5 April for current year returns.
Possibly the statement "For security reasons, Personal Representatives or Executors cannot file a Tax Return online." may be true. It doesn't say agents can't.

I'm thinking Data Processing issue.

HMRC don't want to prove the executors' identity.

More than happy for accountants to take it on. Not their problem.

The letter may be referring to the return for the estate for the period of administration rather than for the final return for the deceased client.

Never had a problem with filing those electronically either.

Thank you for the replies, much appreciated.

HMRC attached paper returns for 2020 and 'Tax return for the year of death', so they were definitely referring to the final returns and not the period of administration.

I think I will ignore the letter and file on-line.

Why wouldn't an agent ignore the letter that says

"For security reasons, Personal Representatives or Executors cannot file a Tax Return online."????
