Can you claim mileage cost for volunteering?

If someone has a ltd and they volunteer can they claim mileage via their own ltd?

Didn't find your answer?

If you have a ltd and you volunteer your services to a couple of organisations (one is a charity, one is a university and one is a ltd) , can you claim mileage to actually get to the place where you volunteer?

My understanding is that if you volunteer you should be able to claim your expenses so that it doesn’t cost you anything.

I wanted to check if anyone thinks it’s actually possible to do?

Surely the volunteering would be in a personal capacity, so it would have nothing to do with the limited company?

"My understanding is that if you volunteer you should be able to claim your expenses so that it doesn’t cost you anything."

Indeed, the volunteer agrees the principle with the charity or organisation and claims from them.

The limited company has benefitted nothing from you incurring the cost so why claim from it?

Yes, you can claim mileage from your company for the travel to where you are volunteering if the place you are volunteering is a registered charity.

I agree. If the company is willing to reimburse you, it can reimburse you.

I didn't know that. Thanks. I wonder if the OP deliberately omitted the word 'charity'.

How does that affect whether or not the company can reimburse it though?

I'm probably being overly suspicious, but it would also be useful if you could confirm that "volunteering" does mean that you're actually doing it voluntarily, rather than, say, under a community service order.
