Can you offer free services as part of a package?

Didn't find your answer?

Hi all,

As a new start up practice, are we allowed to offer free services as part of a package to get clients onboard? For example, free P11D's or confirmation statements?

We wont be offering audit services.

Is this allowed by ACCA for example? Ethics??

Thanks

I see no reason why you can't offer them for free.

However, I would charge them for the service but then provide a discount clearly marked on the invoice as say 'first year discount' otherwise you may get clients argue that the freebies are part of the standard service agreement and they shouldn't have to pay for them in future years.

Make sure your terms are clear on this.

Like many of these things it is about managing expectations. Very often 80% of your business is repeat business from 20% of your client base. That is similar in many lines of business. The business I sold yesterday had many long standing clients including one I signed up in 1988.

Hence you are probably better offering things like the first year free rather than implying that a service will be free for ever (and then changing that).

I always think the best market research, however, is trying something.

Seek opinions by all means. But if you're concerned about whether something is permissible under the rules of your professional body, ask the professional body directly.

Illegal as far as I am aware. Conviction carries a mandatory life sentence.

Aren't you getting confused with giving free advice to anonymous posters on this forum? :)

The services you provide and the basis on which you provide them should be set out clearly in your letters of engagement.

The other way is to call them inclusive services. EG Accounts and CT600 including P11ds
