Changing Charity name

changing a charitable company name but using existing name as" working name"

Didn't find your answer?

I have a client who have approached us to change their name , but retain the same name as a "working name". Generally for companies house i will file form NM01 and then update charity commission details . However , i am confuse where to include the "working name" as there is only one choice for the name.  any advice welcome. Thanks in adance

Sounds daft to me. The company has (to have) one persona yet it wants to be known as something else. A charity too.
Will the charity's alternate persona reveal to its stakeholders (hideous phrase that) its' real status on its' letterheads/advertising etc.....

and what would they say.

The name is the legal name and the "working name" is, I would have thought, irrelevant. Seems an odd thing for a charity to be doing. Has anyone run it past the CC?

I have one
It is as daft as mentioned above, Perfectly good sensible name but a bit long winded
Operating name 2 words one of which is 'The', other word contains none of the words from the real name.
Nobody without guidance could make any kind guess who they are dealing with.

Why do they want to change the registered name?

their reason is that their
1. current name is very restrictive to what they want to be doing
2. they needed something very simple and memorable.
3. maintaining the current name as a working name will help them receive donations in both names e.g. preventing cheques not to be returned if its in the "old name"

Why not 'Old Name Ltd trading as New Name'; there are sevral charities that operate like this?

Both have to be disclosed on formal communication as described above

I'm sure you will have considered whether their trust deed rather than just the name restricts what the charity can be doing.

And whether broadening the purposes/objectives effectively creates a restricted fund from amounts received prior to the change.
