Charging my electric vehicle at work

Benefit in kind, VAT, Allowable Expenses

Didn't find your answer?

I am allowed to charge my electric vehicle at my place of work, Just read an article explainingthat the Company I work for can charge me vat at 20% for the electricity I use in charging my car. Should there also be a Benefit in Kind based on the amount of power I use in charging as I basically use the car to drive from my home to the office? We are thinking of providing more electric cars for the employees so this could all become an issue that needs addressing. Anything else I should consider? The Car I have is a Company car.

I think you asked two different questions:
1. whether the company can charge you VAT
2. whether there should be (or is) a BIK on the electricity used to charge the car

Given that you tell us that it is a company car, there is no BIK in private use scale charge terms on the electricity used to charge it. And therefore, why would they charge you VAT?

Thanks for response. There is a 1% BIK charge on electric vehicles for 2021/22?

The article posted yesterday (see above) talks about vat charges, so does this apply considering the BIK point above?
