Depends how 'big' the charity is. If 'small' (ie income and expenditure only required) then a simple spreadsheet will do.
Also depends how sophisticated the charity's doer's are - many haven't a clue about bookkeeping, let alone accounts.

Can I ask why Sage doesn't suit your purposes? I have used standard accounting packages with small charities and it's basically just a case of changing the nominal account names to match those specific ones you need. Slightly tedious perhaps, but it only needs to be done once.

I'm a treasurer of a charity and we use Xero for our usual bookkeeping (our accountant prepares the year end accounts). If you want fund tracking that's a bit harder but there's no reason you can't separate nominal codes out for restricted and unrestricted expenditure and income.

We act for a number of charities that use Xero and they have implemented, with our help, tracking categories for various funds.

That may be something that you want to look into if you haven’t already.

I recently retired from a practice that handled many charities' books and accounts. The answer to the question is "there isn't one". Sage is hopeless as is Quickbooks which is the one I am guessing is being used. My favourite solution was Excel with a not too complicated a spreadsheet. The standard software packages just don't give the analyses that are needed.

Liberty Accounts has been developed specifically for the not for profit sector. I have used it for three charities. See www.libertyaccounts.com It has full fund analysis, gift aid and the correct SORP reports by fund.

As asked, what doesn't it do?

As with any investment in systems, you need to prepare a list of everything you want it to do and then start matching options.

Most packages will work for most charities, but not all.

WHat does your accountant recommend?

Liberty Accounts has an integrated payroll too and can handle either Receipts and Payments or Accrual accounting, according to the choice made by the charity (this is depending on size).
